Last Saturday a small group of ECC Volunteers cut Water Chestnuts in the Cove. Lacking a 5 hp motor to propel the jon-boat and newly acquired Lake Mower, they cut the plants by hand in areas where they are sparse but newly taking hold and spreading this year. Thanks go to Willie Neumann, Russell Converse, Chris Nealon, Spider and Anita Barbour and Ben and Liza Bolitzer for amassing impressive piles of Water Chestnuts and bringing them to the beach to be picked up by the Village Highway crew.
Hopefully, this coming Saturday, July 14th, ECC will have the out-board motor in hand to propel the jon-boat with the Lake Mower attached. The Lake Mower is a battery powered, environmentally friendly weed cutter that ECC is hoping will begin a serious effort to rid the cove of Water Chestnuts. It’s going to be a long process over several or more years, but the important thing is we have begun and we are learning more and more about how to go about eliminating this invasive weed. Please join us starting at 8 AM Saturday Morning.
We need the support of the public for this project. If you have a 5 hp outboard motor you don’t need any more we could use it. We also need responsible people who are willing to learn how to use the Lake Mower so we can make better use of the machine this summer. We also really welcome people to cut the weeds by hand in areas where they are just beginning to take hold. We have kayaks and canoes available for those who want to help. Donations to help defray expenses will also be greatly appreciated. They can be sent to Esopus Creek Conservancy, P.O. Box 589, Saugerties, NY 12477 or go on our website esopuscreekconservancy.org or call us at 845 247-0664.
