PORT EWEN –To commemorate Ulster BOCES Child Care Center’s annual, end-of-the- year Open House, children were treated to fortune telling, duck pond fishing, sack races, face painting, “tattooing,” and more.
A carnival theme provided the youngsters with hands-on learning activities designed to reinforce skills such as counting, colors and shapes, motor dexterity, and hand and eye coordination.
“This is always a very exciting event. Once again, our staff and the students from the Ulster BOCES Early Childhood Education program ensured that a good time was had by all,” said Kristi Cusa, coordinator of the Ulster BOCES Child Care Center. “It is especially fun for the children to have their parents join them in these activities.”
In addition to the controlled chaos generated by the youngsters’ enthusiasm, there was a special recognition ceremony for six of the children who were moving on to kindergarten. “This is a bittersweet moment for us here at the Child Care Center,” stated Cusa. “Many of our children come to us as infants. We are proud of their accomplishments, but we are going to miss them.”
The Ulster BOCES Child Care Center was recently reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Center provides high quality early education services for children from eight weeks to five years old. Clients include children of Ulster BOCES students enrolled in the Parenting Teen and Adult & Continuing Education programs, Ulster BOCES employees, and the general community.
The Center also serves as a hands-on learning environment for high school students interested in pursuing careers in the childcare field. In addition to studying
early childhood education in the traditional classroom setting, students enrolled in the two-year program are given the opportunity to see the methods and techniques of professional childcare providers, as well as gain actual experience while working with the children themselves.
