Travel and Adventure: Working, learning, cruising in Alaska

HAINES, Alaska -- If I bend over any farther, I will be swimming with the tadpoles. While my friends aboard Holland America's Zaandam cruise to Alaska are zip- lining in the treetops, glacier-walking or dog-sledding, I am counting tadpoles in a pond and estimating the length of their tails to determine their age. It's almost like counting grains of sand, but sand won't tell a woman if she's in "the family way."

How and why to keep a garden journal

Gardening seems like a pretty physical job. What does keeping a journal have to do with it? In the summers I spent working on small organic farms, the farmers kept extensive, detailed journals of what they had planted, where they had planted it, and what their daily activities were, as well as what the temperature and daily weather was. They did this because they needed to track what was working, what wasn't, and why it did or didn't work. What I learned from their garden journals was how important it is to keep a log of daily activities to look back on year-to-year.

Dr. Murray Feingold: How much testing should be done?

You are just not feeling well -- nothing specific or major; more tired than usual; occasional palpitations; you have a little more difficulty falling asleep -- maybe the symptoms are due to increased stress at work. Or, since you just had another birthday, so perhaps the symptoms are due to the fact you are getting older. But then you recall the time your cousin Billy wasn’t feeling well and he ended up in the hospital for months.

Candice Tells All: Basement fireplace becomes focal point of retreat

Hui Anne and Stephen's basement is a multifunctional space that does triple duty as office, TV room and playroom. Their family room is spacious, but it had way too much going on, and none of it was working. When you walked in, you just didn't know where to look -- there were distractions everywhere. The room had become a repository for old, mismatched furniture and storage boxes. But the space had huge potential, and I focused on creating a stylish yet hardworking room, perfect for this young family.

Whoops! Something isn't working right.
