The Morse Rocks Music and Arts Festival which takes place at the Grant D. Morse School on Saturday June 16 will be the venue for some of the hottest and most talented musicians in the area. Not only will it feature local youth bands and performers like Logan Callaghan, Niki Metcalf, Matt Vigna and Greyscale (a three time SHS Lip Sync “Best Live Act” winner), seasoned professional acts such as The John Schrader Band, The New Creek People, Carl Mateo, Glory Road and Doug Yoel will be doing their sets. Additionally, local acts such as Matt and the Bricklayers and The Lonely Old Men will be performing with many others. These acts consist of parents, teachers, counselors and staff members who are associated with the Saugerties Central School System.
“The arts are part of the human experience,” said festival organizer Joe Defino, a special education teacher at Grant D. Morse School. “Morse Rocks was developed because our students need to see that their musical tendencies and affinities are very much a part of the fabric of the human experience. They need be able to rub shoulders with those that have shared musical passions and witness and contemplate the broad diversity and influence of music and music makers.”
“To get musicians like John Schrader, Carl Mateo, Doug Yoel and the rest of the the line-up to agree to play, sends a message that we need to nurture opportunities for our youth in the arts,” Defino added. “I am thrilled to experience the energy and enthusiasm this event is generating.”
The John Schrader Band, led by John Schrader from Kingston, has three CD’s produced, “From Discontent”, “Blood in the Wood” and their latest, “Daylight Crashing.” John has been awarded three times by the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for his compositions and songs. Schrader and his band are continually touring and recording and their music is played on radio stations around the world.
Carl Mateo of the MDB Trio is a musician whose roots are found in the blues. “As a player I am at home in jams with roots in San Francisco and New York and even a little Hoboken, think Yo La Tengo, tossed in for good measure. Add in my love of the early blues and the occasional venture into American soul music and you have a wide snapshot of the house I like to live in,” says Mateo’s website. Carl moved up to the Hudson Valley from Brooklyn and has opened for performers such as John Hammond Jr, Jorma Kaukonen, Suzanne Vega, David Johanson, Robert Hunter and X with John Doe, Ecene Cervenka and Billy Zoom and more.
Doug Yoel will be performing solo, as well. Yoel is an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Statessinger, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and head of Now Forward Music, a record label group based in Woodstock. In 2007, Yoel was nominated for a Grammy. Yoel has a sound that blends organic roots, blues and vintage rock; with classic country heartbreak; and sweetened with bits of soul and reggae. Doug’s songs are aimed to move the spirit, and the body – as are his performances, centered around his uniquely expressive delivery on vocals and guitar.
These local musicians with the many other performers at the Morse Rocks Music and Arts Festival are sure to find a groove with all attendees. The festival is free, but free will offerings will be greatly appreciated. There will also be a wiffleball tournament taking place on the grounds. Suggested players fee is $5.
