Ulster County Community College has named the 2011-2012 recipients of the Al DiBernardo Scholar-Athlete Award. Courtney Schmelz of Marlboro, New York and Matthew Dittus of  Saugerties, New York will each receive a $500 scholarship and will have their names added to the Al DiBernardo Scholar-Athlete Award plaque that is displayed in the college’s Senate Gymnasium lobby.
Schmelz graduated in May with a degree in Liberal Arts Humanities and Social Science and was on the college softball team.  She will continue her studies at Binghamton University in the fall.  Dittus is pursuing an Individual Studies degree at SUNY Ulster and played baseball.                                                                                                                                                                                                                              The Al DiBernardo Scholar-Athlete Awards are given annually in honor of Professor Albert DiBernardo, SUNY Ulster’s first physical education instructor, first coach, and first athletic director. Coach DiBernardo retired in 1994 after serving more than 30 years at the College.
The college’s physical education and recreation leadership instructors and coaches, in conjunction with the College Athletic Director and John Frampton, SUNY Ulster Associate Dean of Student Services, choose a female and a male student-athlete who have demonstrated an above average level of academic achievement while competing in one or more intercollegiate sports. The academic rigor of classes, as well as the number of credits completed, is taken into consideration.  For more information, call John Frampton at 845: 687-5288.
