Kingston, N.Y. -- County Executive Mike Hein today signed a resolution exempting sales tax on the purchase and installation of residential solar systems in Ulster County. Legislator Tracy Bartels of New Paltz took the lead in reintroducing this legislation which originally passed in 2005 but never became effective.
“I applaud Legislator Bartels in taking the lead on this issue and putting into effect this important assistance to the residents of Ulster County and the Ulster County solar industry.  We must continue to do everything in our power to promote the use of solar technology in Ulster County,” stated County Executive Hein. “By signing this resolution, not only are we supporting our local solar industry but we are encouraging the further use of solar installations by lowering the cost of solar systems. I truly believe this legislation is a win/win for Ulster County and I urge lawmakers in Albany to expand this exemption to include commercial systems as well.”

Ulster County Legislator Tracy Bartels said, “Renewable energy is a great way to protect the environment of Ulster County and I am very proud to have been an original sponsor of this legislation as well as the current sponsor.  It is my hope that this exemption will allow more families in Ulster County to use this environmentally friendly source of energy in their homes.”

Ulster County ranks first in solar installation in New York State.  Ulster County is home to The Solar Energy Consortium and has a number of solar product manufacturers including Solar Tech Renewables, Earthkind Solar, Sunwize and Prism.  In addition, Ulster County also has numerous solar equipment manufacturers such as Fala Technologies and Ceres Technologies as well as a host of solar installation firms.
