Meet the Artist Wine and Cheese Reception: Sunday, July 29, 2 - 4 PM at Lifebridge Sanctuary, 333 Mountain Road, Rosendale, NY 12472. 845.658.3439
Through the pieces in this exhibit, Ms. Tully focuses on capturing a strong sense of place and the dynamic order and inherent beauty of the natural world. In doing plein air landscape paintings, mostly in oils, she strives to capture the tones and forms of nature giving the viewer some of the same experience she has felt surrounded by sky and earth.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marianne Tully has enjoyed drawing and painting throughout her life, from her earliest crayon drawings to her present work with a group of artists in the Hudson Valley and Catskills doing landscape oil paintings on site. She studied with artists Brenda Goodman in New York City and F.E.Greene in Catskill, NY and has a doctorate in philosophy and education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was a teacher and school administrator for thirty-nine years, while continuing her painting, which she is now doing full-time, and has exhibited in two solo shows in the last few years: The Civic Center, Windham, NY (2010) and at the Stone Ridge Healing Arts building, Stone Ridge, NY (2012). She has also exhibited in group shows at the Kaaterskill Gallery of the Catskill Mountain Foundation in Hunter, NY (2011), the Greene County Council of the Arts show in Windham (2009), Catskill Mountain Foundation group show at the Civic Center in Windham (2007), and several group shows at The Little Bird Fine Arts Gallery in Hunter, NY (2007—2009). She lives with her husband in the hamlet of Lyonsville, near Stone Ridge, NY.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
The interconnectedness of all life strongly resonates in my paintings through the very process of being in nature as I paint what I see and feel. In an effort to capture the energy of the image, I focus on the interplay of light and shadow while using lively brush strokes and atmospheric techniques. My paintings have been done in cooperation with the Hudson River Artists Guild, a small group of accomplished landscape painters who do plein air paintings in the spirit of the long tradition of the Hudson River School of painters, but with current sensibilities. We hike to exquisite locations in the Catskills and Hudson Valley scrambling over rocks and creeks, climbing ledges, lugging our paints and easels, and set up in front of nature as we find it. We nourish the individual and creative work of each other through supportive critiques and through just being there. I have grown tremendously as an artist through this collaboration.
The opening reception is a unique opportunity to meet Ms. Tully and view her exhibit – Light and Shadows. Those interested in viewing the show are encouraged to attend the Meet the Artist wine and cheese Reception Sunday, July 29, 2 - 4 PM. The installation will hang through September 21, 2012 and viewing is available by appointment.
