The Saugerties League of Women voters is presenting an informational program dealing with election campaign finance reform on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 7:00 pm at the Greco Senior Center on Washington Ave. in Saugerties. all are welcome.
Unfettered campaign spending in 2012 added up to approximately 6.2 billion dollars. Yes, that's billion with a "B."
Large corporations, special interest groups, the mega wealthy, and innumerable Political Action Groups pumped money into national and local races to forward their agendas. Strategies to get big money out of politics and the individual voter back in are being examined in a non-partisan manner by the League.
Come on the 28th to hear what grassroots organizations and reformers are initiating in attempts to stem the monies that fund negative advertising, regulate the amount of money spent on political campaigns and reduce the influence of special interest groups on Congressional decision-making.
Speaking will be Maggie Williams from Move to Amend, an organization working to pass a constitutional amendment overturning the U.S. Supreme Court 2008 decision against the Federal Election Commission. This decision gave corporations the status of individuals with the same right to unfettered free speech. This has been interpreted as removing any limitations on the use of corporate funds to back selected candidates.
The second speaker of the evening will be Jessica Wisneski from Citizen Action of New York. This organization, under the title, Fair Elections for New York, is advocating changes in electoral regulations which would eliminate candidates' need to rely on special interests or sweetheart deals with corporate lobbyists to finance their runs for office.
