The Saugerties League of Women Voters hosted Students Inside Albany Conference  winners at their annual dinner held at the Rip Van Winkle Country Club on May 23, 2012.  Maureen Ball and Eric Beresheim, juniors at Saugerties High School, attended with their mothers Donica Ball and Lore Beresheim.  Maureen was sponsored by the  Saugerties League and Eric was sponsored by the Mid Hudson Region LWV
The following evening, both students were invited to the MHR LWV Pot Luck Dinner held at the Esopus Town

Library.
The 2012 Students Inside Albany Conference was held March 25-28, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Albany. Maureen and Eric were among 54 extremely enthusiastic students representing 37 Leagues from throughout New York State.
At the League dinners, the students presented an overview of their intensive four day training experience which was designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, enacted, and changed in New York State. This training gave them the tools they will be able to use to influence and affect this process.
While in Albany the students heard from a variety of speakers including elected officials, journalists, good government organizations, and LWV experts, who spoke on varying  topics from lobbying to an overview of NYS government, and from transparency in government to the role of media in politics.
Assemblymembers Kevin Cahill and James Tedisco spoke to the students about running for office.  LWVNYS  Legislative Director, Barbara Bartoletti, discussed the many activities included in “grassroots lobbying” and reviewed the Top Ten Tips of Lobbying . She and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward used a role playing exercise with the students to demonstrate examples of good and bad lobbying.
At the Capitol, the students were provided a tour of the building and then went to their assigned Assemblymember’s office to shadow Assemblyman Peter Lopez. All 54 students were welcomed in the Assembly Chambers and introduced on the floor. When the Assembly adjourned, Eric and Maureen were fortunate to spend quite a bit of time with Assemblyman Peter Lopez who graciously answered all their questions.
On the second day the students shadowed their NYS Senator, John Bonacic. All of the students were introduced on the floor of the Senate and heard numerous recountings of the historic Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, on its 101 year anniversary week.
