Art form: Photography
Family: My Husband is a painter and a philosopher
Hometown: I grew up in Huntington, Long Island.
How and when did you start working in your particular medium?
I started in photography when I got a job in a local camera store when I was 16 years old. I was captivated with the medium and began developing
and printing my own work in a darkroom in my family’s basement.
What are two memories from your career that stick out the most?
I had a wonderful experience at Syracuse University and went to Germany on a photo grant and spent a Fall semester in Amsterdam. Although it was long ago it shaped my start in photography.
Although I always took photos and was a commercial photographer and an Art Director I am now able to be a fine art photographer and print my own work. Having a digital studio and a large printer and the support of being involved with the Saugerties Artist Tour Group I am able to explore creatively my passion of photography.
What advice would you give to an aspiring/beginning artist?
Go to openings and look at the art work. Talk to artists about their work and take the time to study art history.
Fortunately you live in an area rich in art history and with fine artists who
work in this area.
Where can someone view your artwork? Do you have a studio and/or website?
You can see my work at www.SusanSammis.com. I have a solo show up currently at Mezzaluna and I will be part of the Saugerties Artist Tour, August 11th and 12th. People are invited in to see the work and our studios.
Is there anything else you would like us to know?
I am proud to associated with the Saugerties Artist Tour and the fine artists
that are members of the group. I look forward to this year’s tour and hope the town with come out and support our group.
