Kingston – Michael R. Spada, died Monday, April 23, 2012, at Kingston Hospital. He was 89 years old.
Mr. Spada was born March 24, 1923 in Glasco, the son of Michael and Theresa Guido Spada. On December 5, 1954 he married the former Ellen Pilviste, with whom he celebrated his 57thwedding anniversary. In addition to his wife, he is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by seven siblings; Louis, John, Frank, and Lillian Spada, Mary Sangi, Rose Carpino, and Jennie Winters.
He operated Spada’s Sport Shop on Broadway in Kingston from 1950 until retirement in 1983. Prior to that he worked in construction and helped to build the New York State Thruway. During WWII he proudly served in the US Army Air Corp as an ordinance technician. He was a Staff Sergeant for the 8th Air Corps in the European Theatre.
As an avid outdoorsman, he took great pleasure in hunting, fishing and traveling to Nova Scotia to hunt moose and geese. He was a member of the Lake Katrine Rod & Gun Club, the Glasco Gun Club, and the Winnasook Rod and Gun Club in Big Indian. He was also a member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and training his black labradors.
As per Mr. and Mrs. Spada’s wishes, funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of Buono Funeral Service, Inc. in Saugerties, In lieu flowers, the family suggests donations in his name be made to Hospice Inc., 34 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401.
