SAUGERTIES…….Clara G. Thornton,101, of Washington Ave. died Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Ten Broeck Commons Nursing Home.   Born December 11, 1910 in Saugerties, she was the daughter of the late August and Theresa Granwehr.  As a young woman she was employed by Cantine's Paper Mill in Manhattan and then in Saugerties, where she became the executive secretary for Martin Cantine, owner and CFO of the mill.  After her marriage to George E. Thornton in 1936 she was associated with him in the operation of Thornton Theatres, Inc.  She always served as his secretary, counselor and right hand man, and served as president of the corporation for a time.  She was an early and active member and then honorary member of the Girls Community Club of Saugerties.  She was a past member of the Saugerties Home Extension Society and a parishioner of St. Mary of the Snow Roman Catholic Church.
            Clare’s home was always a place of welcome for her family and for many others who chose to regularly or temporarily feel part of an extended family.  No one ever went away hungry or without comfort.  Predeceased by her husband, George, in 1988, survivors include one son: Thomas B. Thornton and his wife Jade of Saugerties, and one daughter: Linda Gentalen and her husband Tom of Catskill.  Seven beloved grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many loving nieces and nephews also survive.  Clare was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Anne Brodish, a sister, Paula Mc Cormick, and four brothers: Charles, Walter, August and John.  Her funeral procession will form at 9:30 AM Thursday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. on the corner of John and Lafayette Streets in Saugerties.  It will proceed to St. Mary of the Snow Church where at 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.  Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Friends will be received Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.  Expressions of condolence may be shared on Clare’s memorial page @www.SeamonWilseyFuneralHome.com
