Dear Editor:
I am writing in strong support of Julian Schreibman’s candidacy for U.S. Congress in the 19th C.D. He was the only Democratic congressional candidate who took the time to come to our committee, present his credentials, and ask for our support. He went on to be endorsed by the full Ulster County Democratic Committee of which the Saugerties committee is a member. He has also received endorsements from the Sullivan, Greene and Dutchess County Democratic Committees.
On domestic issues, Julian follows Congressman Maurice Hinchey’s lead in fighting for the FRAC Act (Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act). This law would restore federal oversight of the oil and gas industries under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Julian finds no evidence that fracking is safe for our health or the environment and supports efforts to move towards alternative forms of energy production. He has also focused his campaign on the creation of jobs, protection of Social Security and Medicare, tax fairness, and fighting the Republican’s “War On Women”.
On issues of national security Julian received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for assisting in the prosecution and conviction of four al Qaeda members for bombing U.S. embassies. As a federal prosecutor he worked to dismantle narcotics trafficking rings and to punish white -collar crooks.
Running for Congress is a daunting task. It requires a well-developed campaign infrastructure, sufficient financial resources and a candidate who is experienced in both domestic and foreign issues. I believe that Julian is the most qualified Democratic Party candidate to unseat the Tea Party supported Republican incumbent.
